The Government passed a new law that starts on 26 July 2023. It relates to estates where you die intestate (without having made a Will) and the law dictates who will inherit your estate.

Previous laws said that if you left a spouse or civil partner and children on your death, your spouse would receive the first £270,000 of your estate and all your personal possessions. If your estate was over £270,000, the remainder would be divided equally between your surviving children and your spouse or civil partner. The new law increases the initial sum for your spouse or civil partner from £270,000 to £322,000 for deaths on or after 26 July 2023.

Therefore, it is important you make a Will so you can decide who inherits and who will benefit from your estate. Without a Will, the law will decide for you and in a way you may not wish.
